What Does “It Is Finished” Mean? Understanding the Power of the Cross

It is finished…

These are the words Jesus spoke as He gave up His Spirit in John 19:30. After enduring the most heinous and egregious death in all of human history, He completed the selfless act of becoming a sacrifice for us, declaring, “It is finished.”

But what did He mean by finished? What, exactly, is finished? And how does this atonement impact my present reality? These were all questions I had to wrestle with, because if Jesus was willing to undergo such turmoil—physically, mentally, and spiritually—on my behalf, then I wanted to fully understand and walk in all that He has provided through it.

If He finished the work, then there is something for us to fully receive.

So let’s look at three realities that are now yours because of what Christ accomplished on the cross.

1. We Can Have an Intimate Relationship with God

At the moment of this powerful declaration, something miraculous took place—something that had never been seen before. God made a way for us to have a close, personal relationship with Him. For the first-century church, this would have been profound. The God they were familiar with was seen as unapproachable (Exodus 20:21). Systems were established to maintain distance between God and His people because of His holiness and humanity’s constant inclination toward sin. But after Christ’s sacrifice, that separation was removed.

The veil was torn—distance is no longer your reality.

The veil was torn, and now we have access to the God of the universe—the One who formed us and loves us. We are invited into a relationship that is fully satisfying, one rooted in His love for us. We can speak to Him whenever we desire. Imagine that—direct access to the One who is sovereign and almighty, yet also kind and gracious.

You are not kept at a distance—you are invited in.

2. We Have Access to the Holy Spirit Through Our Adoption

Jesus told His disciples that it was actually good that He was leaving, because He would send a Helper—the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit (John 16:7).Because it is finished, the Holy Spirit now lives within us. He works in us according to the will of the Father and the Son—teaching, correcting, encouraging, and pouring out God’s love into our hearts.

You are not left to figure this life out on your own.

He is the source of strength that is made perfect in our weakness. He empowers us to do the work God has prepared for us—whether as wives, mothers, sisters, friends, or teachers. The Holy Spirit equips us with everything we need to endure, grow, and serve faithfully.

The same power that raised Christ now works within you.

3. We Have a Present and Future Hope

Because it is finished, we now have an eternal hope.

This hope is the promise that one day, the effects of sin will be fully removed. There will be no more separation—only perfect unity between God and His children.

Your story does not end in suffering—it ends in glory.

We can look forward to a time when we will fully experience the glory of our King, no longer limited by the constraints of our humanity. We will worship Him freely and fully, enjoying His presence without hindrance. This is the hope we hold onto when life feels heavy. It gives us something certain, something unshakable, that anchors us in every difficult season.

What is finished in Christ secures what is coming for you.
